12.07.2009 | GRAEF Project, BAYSHORE TOWN CENTER, Captures Design Award!
MILWAUKEE, WI — GRAEF is pleased to announce that the Bayshore Town Center project located in Bayshore, WI was recently presented with a Silver Award by the ICSC US Design and Development Awards. The shopping venue won Silver in the category honoring renovations of a retail space 500,001 square feet or greater. This competition recognizes the premier design and development trends of retail projects and retail store design within the United States.
“Bayshore Town Center integrates residential, retail, dining, office, a health club and two freestanding pavilions framing a central town square into the partial demolition and renovation of a preexisting indoor mall. A hybrid town center and enclosed mall, Bayshore includes an eclectic blend of architectural styles, featuring a prominent two-level octagonal grand rotunda, a powerful linking element between indoor and outdoor components. The heart of the new Bayshore, the rotunda includes double-height windows and clear stories, and opens onto a valet plaza. A connecting walkway runs from the rotunda to an adjacent parking deck. The Grand Hall highlights the interior renovation, using windows, light fixtures, graphics and signage to convey the impression of a street transformed into a covered, colorfully animated retail galleria. The project features over 215,000 square feet of office and 115 loft-style residential-above-retail apartments, while 75 condominium-style residences laminate the four-level eastern parking deck and interface with adjacent neighborhoods. A diverse mix of restaurant, retail and entertainment options includes an eight-screen art-house cinema and a comedy club. Brick and stone facades and copper roofing add Milwaukee character and architectural flavor, while outward-facing retail engages the surrounding community and integrates with an existing commercial avenue.”
Winners of ICSC’s U.S. Design and Development Awards program will automatically be entered into the ICSC’s Global Design and Development Awards competition, the Best-of-the-Best, and eligible to be named “The Shopping Center of the Year” or the “Best Sustainability Project”. The winners of the Best-of-the-Best Awards are announced during RECon, ICSC’s annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, May 2010.

10.09.2009 | GRAEF Project Wins ASCE-WI Engineering Achievement Award
MILWAUKEE, WI — GRAEF is pleased to announce that a recently completed bridge project has been recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers – Wisconsin Section (ASCE-WI) in their recent 2009 Engineering Achievement Award competition. The STH 29 Westbound Over USH 51 bridge was honored among projects with construction costs over $10 million and under $20 million.
STH 29 is a 1,991 foot long, 14-span bridge on the west edge of Wausau. Wisconsin. The bridge provides a free flow connection carrying westbound STH 29 interchange traffic over USH 51, Sherman Street, and the CN Railroad. The goal of this project was to creatively use engineering knowledge to provide Wausau, Wisconsin with a safe and functional bridge.
From the project’s onset, the design team was in tune with the needs and wishes of the community and nearby stakeholders. Through the use of the Value Planning Process, extensive local interest involvement was a key to making sure the outcome was successful. The final alignment, as selected through this process, required highly skewed crossings of USH 51 northbound and southbound, as well as Sherman Street and the CN Railroad. Steel, in combination with prestressed concrete, was the design choice for both stability and aesthetic reasons.
The highly skewed crossings challenged the design team. Necessary for space, height, and congestion reasons, the team needed to use a finite-element analysis of the steel tub that was well beyond standard design detail practice. The use of longitudinally split and bolted bottom flanges to reduce risk from use of non-redundant two girder systems is a first in Wisconsin. The central section of the bridge, the curved steel trapezoidal tub girder, has spans of 199, 233, 170, and 145 feet. These spans are comparable to the longest span for this structure type in Wisconsin.
Additional challenges and solutions were met and used throughout the project. As a result, motorists and pedestrians on Sherman Street see an aesthetically pleasing structure that is safe, economical, and efficiently moves travelers. Because engineers creatively combined the use of steel and concrete, the appearance is pleasing, the cost was reduced, and the structure is sound. The decking is overlayed with a safety-enhancing polymer resin to reduce skidding and lengthen the life of the concrete, while sight-lines for drivers are enhanced through design decision and 3-D analysis. Finally, the future maintenance of the bridge will be more easily and effectively accomplished because excellent forethought was used during the design process.
The people of Wausau wanted a safe, functional structure. Their goal was not a bridge that stood out and made a strong architectural statement, but instead a structure that subtly blended into the northwoods area. The USH 51/STH 29 structure accomplishes these goals and is an example of how sound engineering and creative thinking can result in a financially responsible project that attains its goals on time and on budget.
Congratulations to our clients and all firms involved with this deserving bridge project!

GREEN BAY, WI — GRAEF is pleased to announce that the Claude Allouez Bridge in De Pere, WI was awarded the GRAND AWARD from ACEC-WI at their recent annual meeting in Kohler, Wisconsin. The Claude Allouez Bridge was dedicated and opened to traffic in the City of De Pere on October 6, 2007. The official grand opening event was the culmination of an extensive planning, design and construction effort that spanned more than a decade.
The new bridge spans the Fox River just south of the previous bridge and immediately adjacent to the De Pere dam. The bridge connects the downtown business districts on the east and west sides of this growing community of 21,000. The bridge has a length of nearly 1700 feet and includes four traffic lanes in addition to bike and sidewalk accommodations.
Located on the east approach to the bridge is Northeast Wisconsin’s first two-lane roundabout. The roundabout was constructed in lieu of a signalized intersection for a number of reasons. The roundabout required less right-of-way, was more cost effective to build, requires less long-term maintenance than a traffic signal, is more efficient at moving traffic and is considered operationally safer for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
During the course of this project, communication played a critical role in navigating a number of controversial issues and resulted in a successful outcome. Not only did the project team have to manage the day to day issues and controversies surrounding a project of this complexity, but the local elected officials also needed to deal with an attempt at direct legislation through a binding referendum. In the end, the community overwhelmingly embraced the project and celebrated its success during grand opening ceremonies.
Community sensitive design consideration and creation of a visual statement for the new structure were a high priority. During the preliminary design, the City requested that an architect be commissioned to assist in determining the final look of the structure. David Kahler, FAIA, who worked on the 6th Street Viaduct and the Art Museum in Milwaukee, assumed that role.
The existing character of downtown De Pere is quaint and historic. As a result, the final concept proposed was for a modern looking bridge. A modern looking structure emphasizes that visual disparity and actually strengthens the historic downtown appearance. To add a sense of solidarity, 50 foot high concrete pylons were positioned on the four corners of the bridge providing a gateway effect, simultaneously proclaiming both a beginning and ending of the structure.
Each of the bridge’s 12 piers was also designed to be significantly slimmer than normal, extending well beyond the bridge deck with a wedge shape on either side. The affect gives the viewer an appearance of cutting the water like a knife. As an additional bold step, a white finish was applied to the bridge. It was selected because white responds better to low levels of ambient light, thus highlighting the subtle design features of the bridge. The white color also unifies the diverse components of the bridge into a cohesive unity.
Now that the reconstruction is complete and bridge has been operational for nearly seventeen months, the Claude Allouez has become an identifiable landmark in De Pere. It has successfully connected two halves of a community, added spectacular design flair to the river crossing, and provides safe access for motorists and pedestrians. What began as a feat of community relations has ended as a design success!

05.01.2007 | GAS Recognized as Best in State at 2007 ACEC-WI Engineering Excellence Awards Competition
Graef Anhalt Schloemer & Associates, Inc. (GAS) was recognized as a Best in State award recipient in the 2007 ACEC-WI Engineering Excellence Awards Competition. Winners were announced in February 2007 as part of the national Engineers’ Week celebration. Below is a summary of the project’s highlights.
GREEN BAY, WI — the centerpiece of the Friendship Trail between the Cities of Manitowoc and Stevens Point is the Little Lake Butte des Morts Trestle/Trail in Menasha. The City and Town of Menasha, with the help of the GAS design team, undertook an adaptive reuse of this community asset. It was recognized early on that factors surrounding this project would significantly complicate the effort, but also create some unique and interesting opportunities. By reusing the old railroad trestle structure, and taking advantage of its local history and interest, a pedestrian and cycling trail with four unique elements was developed.
The design team overcame challenges including crossing a navigation lock by designing a charming European-style lift bridge; creating a boardwalk crossing a wetland area, thereby avoiding a still active railway; developing special use platforms housing pavilions and fishing piers to work double-wide trestles into the design; and eliminating an uncomfortable tunneling affect on long, linear trail sections by using an open, yet safety conscience, railing system.
The completed trail, the longest (1600 feet) pedestrian trail crossing a body of water in Wisconsin, is maintenance friendly and available for use 24 hours a day seven days a week. Material selection considered maintenance issues, safety lighting, and overall experience enhancements for the users.
In August 2005, the dream was realized when completion of the Little Lake butt des Morts Trestle Trail Project culminated with a ribbon cutting ceremony. An estimated 1000 local citizens stood ready to begin using this new community link, and usage counts have demonstrated this support. Weekday totals reach 400 - 600 people during warmer months, and weekend counts average 1000-1500/day. Viewed locally as a glowing success, the project has received significant attention and use. It has received recognition from a number of sources. In many ways, the trail has became much more than “just a trail.” It functions as an expansive recreational resource that is proving to be a great asset to the area communities. Close More...

09.25.2006 | GAS Engineers Serve as Leaders in Guatemala Bridge Building Projects
MILWAUKEE, WI - Many places outside the doors of GAS, or any other firm in the United States, are not as fortunate as we are. Marquette University developed a relationship with the Guatemalan nonprofit organization, PAVA, to facilitate design and construction of infrastructure projects in less fortunate areas of that Central American country. Since 2002, seven GAS staff members have traveled to Guatemala to volunteer work on infrastructure projects. Early volunteers included Nick Skiffington, Jacqueline Herington, Shelly Cornelius, and Kendra Hansen. In 2005, three current GAS engineers were involved with building infrastructure and building community.
The Rio Grande Motagua Bridge in La Garrucha, Guatemala was the senior design project of Andrew Thorson and three other engineering students. The bridge replaced an aging footbridge with a swing and sway not unlike that seen in many cartoons. The old footbridge limited access to health care and education for people living on both sides of the large river valley.
Andrew Thorson and Jackie Martinez were involved with the project and are now full-time engineers at GAS. Kevin Hagen, vice president and principal of the firm, was also a key player on the Motagua bridge team. Through his involvement with Engineers Without Borders, he served as an experienced bridge engineer mentoring the students as they designed and built the bridge.
With the help of nearly 100 Guatemalan residents daily, teams of 20 students and a handful of professionals built forms, footings, and trusses. Everything was done with manual labor including transporting and mixing material for concrete, building lengthy bridge trusses, and setting trusses in place on perches 20 feet above a shallow riverbed. The project took four weeks to complete with volunteers sleeping in tents on the riverbanks and working from 6 a.m. until well after dark.
Peace Corp volunteers present at the site helped with interpreting to Spanish and local Mayan dialects. The community’s residents, few of whom spoke English, expressed their gratitude with a welcome celebration and good-bye feast.
The bridge, dubbed the Friendship Bridge, not only makes crossing the river safer, but it has forged a new bond between local villages, El Quiche‘ and Chimaltenango, whose residents had suffered years of repression during a guerilla war.
