Marquette University School of Dentistry

GRAEF provided structural engineering services for this project. The building is composed of two parts that are distinctly different in their framing systems. There is a 3-story, two-way reinforced concrete flat-slab structure for the classrooms and labs, and a single level long span structural steel structure for the auditorium/lecture halls. These two areas are joined by a structural steel entrance/assembly structure. The auditorium features a large clerestory space, and raked seating. The building exterior has large expanses of glass and masonry.

The new, 120,000 square foot, state-of-the art dental school for Marquette University is the only dental school in Wisconsin, and was jointly developed by MU and the State of Wisconsin. This facility is the most technologically advanced dental school in the country. It includes classrooms, lecture halls, simulation labs where students can gain experience in a virtual reality setting, and a 96-chair clinic that allows students to operate like a small clinic.

The design of the dental school evolved over a period of time, and was heavily influenced by student, faculty and practitioner input. As an integral part of this design process, GRAEF engineers designed a high quality, customized structure that will meet the needs of the university and dental community for many years to come.
