Martha Jefferson Hospital

Martha Jefferson Hospital is a nationally-recognized community hospital located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. To help set the standard for clinical quality and personal healthcare, they are replacing their existing 100-year old facility on a new 84-acre campus within Peter Jefferson Place, a development near Thomas Jefferson’s world-renowned estate, Monticello.

The campus plan is to create a hospital in a park filled with nature, water, outdoor spaces and beautiful views. The new 525,000 square foot hospital is pursuing LEED® Silver certification. GRAEF is performing master planning, site/civil engineering, structural engineering, landscape architecture, traffic planning, environmental engineering and preliminary LEED® evaluation.

The four-story steel framed structure bears on a combination of extensive fill material, native soil and bedrock. Rammed aggregate piers were utilized to support the structure on difficult bearing strata.

An intermittent stream with severe side slopes was a unique site/civil challenge. A portion of the stream had to be relocated and required an Army Corps Chapter 14 and 39 permit.
