General Mitchell International Airport 2nd Parking Structure
The General Mitchell International Airport (GMIA) Parking Structure project provides an addition of 3,000 parking spaces at Milwaukee’s airport. Along with the additional parking capacity, this $81 million project includes infrastructure improvements to serve the needs of the airport well into the future. To make room for the new parking structure, the power plant serving the airport was demolished. It was replaced by a new $12 million facility with 50 percent more capacity and designed to satisfy the heating and cooling needs of the airport for the next 30 years. Several other buildings were also relocated to make room for the new structure.
Access to the parking structure was accomplished with new roadways and bridges. Since the airport had to remain fully operational during the three-year construction period, construction of the roadways and site utilities was carefully staged and coordinated.
The parking structure addition was constructed immediately north of the existing structure. A new 700-foot long pedestrian access corridor separates the new structure from the existing and serves as a central spine, allowing parkers a direct path back to the terminal. This space features moving walkways in a climate-controlled environment.
The parking structure is six stories high and now has a total capacity of 9,400 cars. The façade treatment for this massive structure resulted in a careful blending of the new and existing structures. Other features for the parking structure include: improved car counting systems to identify open areas within individual parking levels, revised circulation patterns in the existing structure, relocation of rental car service counters into the existing structure, and state of the art design of corrosion resisting enhancements to the structure. The design accommodates a future addition of 2,000 cars.
