University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee RiverView
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee had a real need for student housing with 1,800 incoming freshmen denied campus housing in 2007. The University recently added a new residence hall designed exclusively for first-year students. RiverView is a 488-bed, six-story resident hall with a full basement, dining facility, fitness room, laundry facility, coffee shop, lounges, convenience store and student kitchen. Students are housed in suites that feature double-occupancy rooms and a shared bathroom.
GRAEF provided the site/civil engineering for the project located on a small and challenging site along the Milwaukee River. Services included site paving, grading, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water service, and storm water management design for the student housing building. Among the project challenges was dealing with a significant grade change, the use of underground storage for storm water and the use of lightweight foam fill over an existing City of Milwaukee water distribution pipe. The design schedule was substantially compressed to allow the University to obtain permits and construct the building on an accelerated schedule.
