Home Depot

As part of its entry into the Milwaukee market, Home Depot planned to construct a store at the intersection of West Capitol Drive and North 124th Street, in the City of Wauwatosa. GRAEF was retained to provide site/civil engineering design services, which included development of the store site, and reconstruction of the intersection at 124th Street and Lisbon Road.

The Home Depot’s goal was to construct a 120,000 square foot store on property occupied by a manufacturing facility and a number of other defunct businesses. Assembling a site large enough for the store and the required parking and drive areas also required the vacation and removal of a segment of Lisbon Road, between 124th Street and Capitol Drive. This meant that an entirely new signalized intersection was needed for Lisbon Road and 124th Street, along with substantial revisions to the intersection of 124th Street and Capitol Drive. Additional challenges were encountered in the relocation of a major cellular tower and related facilities, and the provision of drive access for the Mobil Shredding Company, located on the southeast corner of the site.

The project, which took two years to complete, has proven to be a huge success, bringing a major retail outlet to the City of Wauwatosa while improving a problem intersection. Diligent efforts by members of the GAS design team, in evaluating alternatives, responding to changing priorities, and providing information and design solutions on a timely basis, helped Home Depot meet its goal of a first class home improvement store in the City of Wauwatosa.
