University of Wisconsin - Madsion Union South

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Union South was built in 1971 and its size and configuration limits activities for the growing campus. Students wanted to create an enduring campus center with its own identity. Union South is pursuing LEED® certification and will be UW-Madison’s first LEED-rated sustainable design project. GRAEF is providing site/civil engineering, structural engineering and landscape architecture services for the new 275,000 square foot Union South and programming for the existing Memorial Union.

The new building creates a new green space serving as a gateway to the south side of campus. The building will provide large event spaces for student dances, fairs and conferences. It features a lounge space with a skyline view, auditorium, eight-lane bowling alley and two-story, 60-room hotel. The framing system consists of mildly reinforced two way structural slab for the parking and the upper four levels and light gauge framing for the hotel portion.
