Lambeau Field Redevelopment

Lambeau Field, wholly owned by the City of Green Bay, was the longest tenured facility in the NFL and the third oldest facility in the league. The 42-year-old facility had been modified a number of times and its year 2000 capacity was 60,890, which includes 198 private boxes and 1,920 club seats.
In 2000, GRAEF was retained to provide the site/civil/utility engineering and act as associate structural engineer (foundations and structural steel design) for the $295 million renovation of historic Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. The complex phased project added 11,625 seats to the stadium, provided all new luxury and press box areas, added an upper concourse, and added a large new office/retail area called “Titletown”.

As site/civil engineer, GRAEF was responsible for utility relocation and enhancement, site improvements, stormwater detention and storm sewers, sanitary sewer design, new pavement design, and other site related design. An interesting and significant part of the utility work involved a one-half million gallon holding tank for sanitary wastes. The extremely large tank was designed to accommodate game day populations of 72,000 fans. The automated controls allow the tank to store wastes on-site during peak use and slowly discharge them to the municipal system during the much longer off-peak periods. The entire site/civil design process was complicated by the phased construction schedule, which extended over a three-year period while keeping the stadium operational during football season, and the Packer administrative offices operational year-round.

As associate structural engineer, GRAEF was responsible for the design of deep and shallow foundation systems for the entire stadium development, below grade structures, access tunnels, and the structural steel design of a significant portion of the new “Titletown” addition to the stadium. Titletown houses the new Packer offices, training facilities, locker rooms, and other associated support areas, along with the Packer Hall of Fame and other office and retail functions.

GRAEF also participated in reviewing existing building plans and design team/contractor in reviewing demolition of the existing

In addition to the significant technical challenges presented by the project, GRAEF was challenged by the extreme fast-track design schedule, and by the complex construction schedule. Working with a big team on a large complex project is a special skill that GRAEF brings to the project.

A tremendous team effort was required by GRAEF and the entire design/construction team to give the Packers and the City of Green Bay a new state-of-the-art stadium that will be a 365-day per year destination.
