Health Sciences Learning Center

The new Health Sciences Learning Center, part of the University of Wisconsin – Madison’s Health Star initiative to develop educational and research resources, functions as a combined teaching facility between the School of Nursing, the Medical School, and the School of Pharmacy. This new educational hub is the latest addition to the medical campus, which started with the construction of the first modules of the UW Hospital in 1972.

The size of the building is approximately 350,000 square feet on four floors, with underground parking. The structure is organized into two geometric shapes separated by a four-story atrium. Both elements house several libraries. The rectangular “bar” portion is concentrated with classrooms and office spaces. The “crescent” portion contains reading rooms, lecture halls and common spaces. Several grand stairs are featured in the lower spaces and reading areas of the buildings.

The building accommodates more than 1,500 students and 250 faculty personnel. Eventually, three more research buildings are planned that will enhance the level of contribution from this facility to the University and the people of Wisconsin.

GRAEF provided structural engineering services on this project.
