Endangered Species Transplantation

GRAEF was retained to perform a botanical survey in the project area of existing seaside crowfoot (Ranunculus cymbalaria), a listed endangered plant species in Illinois. Populations were located along U.S. Interstate 94 (Tri-State Tollway) north of the Deerfield Plaza, in Lake County, Illinois. Following population assessment, GRAEF developed and implemented a conservation plan for the species.

After verifying seaside crowfoot’s presence in the area, GRAEF scientists completed a survey of all existing populations within the impact areas. GRAEF scientists worked closely with the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to develop a plan to preserve the endangered species.

Prior to road construction, plants were transplanted to three nearby sites selected by GRAEF and approved by the IDNR. Efforts by GRAEF to identify the plant locations and prepare plans for their preservation resulted in approval of the overall project by the IDNR.
