University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Mary Ann Cofrin Hall
GRAEF was retained to provide structural engineering services for the new Mary Ann Cofrin Hall at the UW-Green Bay campus.
The University of Wisconsin - Green Bay needed additional classroom and office space. The proposed solution was a three-story building with an area of 199,700 square feet. The building houses approximately 40 percent of the classrooms on campus (including facilities for many of the environmental science programs), faculty offices, and special collections.
The building is lighted largely by daylight and uses environmentally friendly materials where possible. It produces about 15% of its own electrical demand through the use of photovoltaic panels that are integrated into the roof system. It is expected that the facility will use less than half of the energy of a comparable building not built with energy conservation in mind.
The resulting building is comprised of structural elements consisting of three materials: structural steel for much of the superstructure; masonry bearing walls were used where possible; and reinforced concrete was used for the foundations as well as the link to the existing library.
