Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin

Pier Wisconsin is a 120,000 square foot educational center and museum located at Municipal Pier on the shores of Lake Michigan. The site houses Discovery World, a children’s museum and educational center, and the Great Lakes Aquatarium featuring Great Lakes history and aquatic life. The Aquatarium partially extends over Lake Michigan. The facility is also home to the Great Lakes Schooner, the Dennis Sullivan, which is moored in a protected harbor. The project included an underground parking structure, extensive landscaping and unique gardens.

GRAEF provided site/civil engineering, survey services and landscape architectural design for the project. Site/civil engineering involved the design of an adjacent restaurant and new sanitary sewers and watermains. The new services were required as the existing sewer and watermains were removed for underground parking. GRAEF also designed a new storm sewer system for the facility and reconstructed East Michigan Street. Design of utility service lines, site grading, and site paving was also provided.

Landscape architectural services included design of special gardens and pathways associated with the project, and the fountain. Landscaping was designed to be consistent with the landscaping for the adjacent Milwaukee Art Museum site, including the Kiley Gardens.
